Cosmetic Dentistry

Your mouth and your smile say a lot about you and having a healthy, white set of teeth can seriously boost your confidence and sense of wellbeing. We at Barbour Dental Care recognise that and are therefore not only passionate about ensuring our patients follow a regular and thorough oral health routine, but we also offer a range of cosmetic treatments that will ensure your teeth look and feel healthy and attractive as well.

Whitening

Teeth naturally discolour over time, especially if you regularly drink coffee, tea or red wine which gradually stain the enamel, so we offer a range of whitening treatments, which can be tailored to your individual needs and preferences. These include fast and effective in-surgery whitening, in which one of our experienced dentists can whiten your teeth up to a maximum of six shades in the space of one hour.

If you don’t have time for that, we can, after an initial consultation and bespoke tray fitting appointment, send you home with a course of whitening treatments that you can administer yourself at home over a two-week treatment period. You can choose the strength, with our advice, and also whether you carry out the treatment for two half-hour stints during the day, or two hour-long stints at night. The choice and control is up to you.

If you’re thinking of going to a local beautician for whitening treatment, please think again. They are not properly trained and it is illegal to carry out whitening treatments without a dental qualification. Never let anyone but a fully-qualified dental professional touch your teeth!

Veneers

Another option for improving the appearance of your teeth is a veneer. As well as hiding any discolouration, veneers can treat teeth that have been chipped, damaged or worn away, especially at the front of the mouth. They can also be used to even out irregularly spaced teeth and ease minor overcrowding.

A veneer is a thin, layer of dental material that is designed to fit over the front of a prepared tooth to restore it or improve its appearance. They are custom-made, tooth-coloured porcelain or composite shells that bond to the surface of your teeth, similar to the way false nails are attached. Due to continual developments in porcelain and resin technology, veneers can now be made as thin as 0.2mm.

Veneers are normally fitted over two separate appointments. During the first appointment, the teeth will be prepared for the veneers; the teeth are numbed to avoid any discomfort during treatment and then a minimal amount of the front surface of the teeth is removed and an impression is taken, so that the veneers can then be custom-made. At the second appointment, the veneers are fitted with a special resin cement, to create a natural-looking, flawless smile.
